CROSSING A CONTINENT
The Incredible Journey of
Cabeza de Vaca
Lissa Johnston
This is the story of Alvar Nuñez Cabeza de Vaca, the Spanish explorer and first European ever to set foot in some parts of what is now the American Southwest. He and a handful of survivors of a doomed mission to explore Florida, washed ashore on an island off the Texas coast in 1528. For eight years he wandered through what is now Texas, Mexico, and perhaps parts of Arizona and New Mexico, before finding fellow Spaniards near the Pacific coast of Mexico in 1536. When he finally returned to Spain, he wrote a report of his travels, including observations of the different Native American tribes with which he became familiar.

Mr. Green's
Magnificent Machine
by Bryan Woolley
Illustrations by Scott Arbuckle

“I love trains,” Mr. Green says. “I love all great machines, with their wheels and rods and gears! I love the stink of them and the noise of them!”
People claim that Ned Green is odd. Eccentric. Peculiar. Rumor has it that he always carries a handful of diamonds in his pocket. And once, he even flew skyward in a balloon. But people are very interested in everything Mr. Green does, because he also is the biggest man in Dallas—meaning the richest.
On October 5, 1899, Mr. Green makes history by driving Texas’ first motor car from Terrell to Dallas.
A farmer’s wife says, “It’s a creature of the devil!”
A blacksmith says, “This is the dangedest mess of metal I ever saw.”
By the end of the day, though, Mr. Green and his companions have traveled thirty miles in only five hours, ten minutes. And Texas will never be the same.

THE FEESTER FILIBUSTER
by Molly Levite Griffis
"Pearl Harbor got bombed. Rachel thought John Alan did it. He did not."
That's how John Alan Feester sums up what happened in The Rachel Resistance. In The Feester Filibuster, which tells his side of the story, John Alan shows he's not a spy at all–even though he does a lot of spying to prove it.
Spies may or may not lurk in the shadows, but mysteries still abound in Apache, Oklahoma. A package holding an angel begins to tell the untold story behind John Alan's mother. The previously silent Simon Green begins talking and can't seem to stop–and in the process reveals a secret about himself. And everyone keeps watch on whether blue stars turn to gold in the windows of residents like Mrs. Snow.

It is white man’s year of 1840. Tsena, sixteen-year-old son of a Comanche peace chief, does not know that it is also the year white man will change his life forever.
He longs to prove himself as a warrior while his father strives to keep peace with the Texans. When Tsena accompanies his father and other chiefs to a council in San Antonio, the negotiations turn violent. He is suddenly cast into white man’s world, where he learns about a new way of life and glimpses the power of the written word.
